Dead of the Night
Trial By Ordeal
The main quest for Dead of the Night is called Trial By Ordeal. The goal for our Chaos story crew is to defeat the Evil Within.
Requirements
This quest can be completed with any number of players. You'll need to acquire the following items to complete this quest fully:
Homunculus (found in the Mystery Box)
While the Homunculus is not truly required at any point of this main quest, we recommend getting them out of the Mystery Box as they make the entire quest much more enjoyable and achieveable.

Step 1: Activate the Sentinel Artifact
Head to the opposite side of the Main Hall, and at the top of the Grand Staircase will be the Sentinel Artifact which you must interact with to activate and dispel the Prima Materia blocking some doorways/entrances.
While you are making your way to the Sentinel Artifact, this is a good time to pick up the Ballistic Shield parts along the way to build this as soon as possible
Building the Ballistic Shield
There are three parts required to build the Ballistic Shield, each having three spawn locations
The first part is the Body, which can be found in one of the three locations:
The second part is the Frame, which can be found in one of the three locations:
The final part is the Handles, which can be found in one of the three locations:
Once all three parts have been collected you can build the Ballistic Shield on the Workbench inside the Smoking Room.
Step 2: Unlock Pack a Punch
You must obtain three Tuning Forks by completing three challenges, each rewarding you with a Tuning Fork to dispel the Prima Materia blocking the entrance into the forest where Pack-a-Punch is located. To begin these challenges, you must find three glowing crystals, each hidden inside a vase in a location on the map. The three locations for these crystals are:
There are multiple vases in each location indentical to the ones shown above, the above images show the crystal emitting a colored smoke out of a vase indicating you have found the right vase.
Once you have found the crystal's vase, melee/shoot it to reveal the crystal and you must now begin killing zombies near the crystal to charge it with souls. Once filled, interact with the crystal to "Gaze into the Stone" revealing one of six possible items each corresponding to a certain challenge:
Grandfather Clock (Clock Challenge)
Noose/Rope (Escort Challenge)
Doll (Escort Challenge)
Painting (Escort Challenge)
Scroll (Escort Challenge)
Perk Statue (Nosferatu Challenge)
Clock Challenge
You must find one of three Grandfather Clocks based on the image you were shown when gazing into the stone. The three different Grandfather Clocks and their locations are:
Once you have found the Grandfather Clock shown to you when you gazed into the stone, interact with it to spawn a blue circle on the ground that you must remain in until all the Roman numeral symbols around the blue circle have disappeared.
Once completed, a Tuning Fork will be released from inside the clock which you can interact with to pick up.
Escort Challenge
You must find the item that was not a Grandfather Clock or Perk Statue shown to you when gazing into the stone, you can find the locations of each item here: Noose/Rope, Doll, Painting, Scroll. Once you find the item, interact with it to spawn a ghost you must follow. Follow the ghost until it stops, then interact with it again to reveal the Tuning Fork you must interact with to pick up.
Painting
There are four different Paintings you could have seen each in a different location:
Noose/Rope
Scroll
Doll
Nosferatu Challenge
You must find the Perk Statue that was shown to you when gazing into the stone, this Perk Statue will either be in the Cemetery/Mausoleum, Gardens or Wine Cellar. Once found, walk up to it and survive against an onslaught of Nosferatus and the final Nosferatu will drop the Tuning Fork.
Once you have all three Tuning Forks you can dispel the Prima Materia blocking the entrance to the Forest containing Pack-a-Punch near the Forest Terrace. However, before doing that you should obtain the Silver Bullets as this will make killing the Werewolf inside this forest much easier and will drop an item required for obtaining the Alistair's Annihilator.
Obtaining the Silver Bullets
The first part of crafting the Silver Bullets is melting down three silver objects around the map each having three spawn locations.
The first silver object is the Candelabra which can be found in one of three locations:
The second silver object is the Trophy which can be found in one of three locations:
The final silver object is the Plate which can be found in one of three locations:
Once you have collected all the silver objects, you can now melt the objects on the Workbench inside the Wine Cellar, creating melted silver which you can pick up.
The second part of crafting the Silver Bullets is finding three items each with three spawn locations to infuse with the melted silver.
The first item is Charcoal which can be found in one of three locations:
The second item is the Bat Poop which can be found in one of three locations:
The final item is the Sulfur which can be found in one of three locations:
Once you have collected all three items you can head to the Library and use the Workbench in that room to craft the Silver Bullets which are free to equip for the first time only.
It is recommended to use this free first time use of the Silver Bullets on your best weapon, ideally a fully-kitted Spitfire which can be found just above the Library in the Study, or on a Mystery Box weapon like the Hellion Salvo or the Hades.
Step 3: Complete the Three Questlines
Before procceding onto the three questlines, you should obtain the Alistair's Annihilator as it's required for the Knight and Effigy Questlines and is a great weapon to have for the Telescope Questline. You should also build the Fire Trap as this is required for the Knight Questline.
You must gaze into the same crystals used for Unlocking Pack-a-Punch and can see three different images, each of which corresponds to a certain questline that you must complete. You don't need to remember any of these images, you just need to gaze into all three crystals to activate the three questlines.
The order in which you complete these questlines does not matter, but you will not be able to start a questline unless you have gazed into the corresponding cystal so be sure to gaze into all three before continuing on with the main quest.
Telescope Questline
Head to the Mausoleum, all players in the game must shoot the rod above the Mausoleum using Silver Bullets at the same time, doing so will cause a light to shine toward the crystal above the Atlas head in the Main Hall and the rod will disappear.
Afterward, head to the North Atrium Bridge where you must rotate three wheels on a panel controlling the rings above Atlas' head to line up all three beams, destroying his head. You'll know if a beam is in the correct alignment if grows bigger and brighter.
This can be done easily by following the steps below:
Turn the left wheel until the blue beam starts glowing
Turn the right wheel until the green beam starts glowing
Turn the middle wheel until the red beam starts glowing
Finally, turn the left wheel until blue and green beams start glowing together
Hold the interact button to turn the wheels. If the above strategy didn't work for you the first time, repeat it from the beginning until it does.
Once completed, you must find three Zodiac Symbols around the map and find scratch mark patterns within the same room. There can be up to three scratch mark patterns and you must count the lines on each pattern and assign the sum of all marks to the Zodiac Symbol within the same room. Below is an image of all Zodiac Symbols for easy reference:
Important Note: As an example to help understand this step, if you find the Aries Zodiac Symbol and in that same area you find three scratch mark patterns, the first having three marks, the second having five marks, and the third have 4 marks. You would add 3 + 5 + 4 = 12 and you would write down or remember Aries = 12.

The Zodiac Symbols and Scratch Marks are engraved into the objects they appear on so look carefully as they can be hard to see sometimes. Remember that only three of the above locations will have a Zodiac Symbol and Scratch Marks.
Once you have found the three Zodiac Symbols and the number of Scratch Marks associated with them, head to the telescope inside the Greenhouse Laboratory. There will be a wheel with all the Zodiac Symbols and you need to input the three symbols you found in the order of least to most Scratch Marks.
Hold the interact button to turn the wheel and melee the wheel to input that symbol. If you fail, you will need to flip the round and look for three new symbols and scratch marks and try again.
If done successfully, with your shield out you can hold the interact button on the gold wheel just before the Zodiac Symbol wheel until it stops spinning. Afterward, use the shield to bash the wheel, breaking it and preventing it from turning back.
Once that is done activate the trap downstairs and all players in the game must run through the trap with their shields out to electrify it. Once electrified, all players must shield bash the telescope at the same time firing a beam from the telescope revealing a full moon.
Head back downstairs and beneath the telescope will be a big stone slab that you must interact with for around five seconds. Doing so will begin a lockdown where you must survive against Zombies, Nosferatus, and Werewolves.
Killing three Werewolves will complete the lockdown. During this lockdown, if you are killing Nosferatus with the charged shot of the Chaos Theory they will drop Bile which is a material that you will need to upgrade into the Alistair's Annihilator for the other two questlines
Once completed, you can interact with the big stone slab to pick it up and will be rewarded with a Max Ammo, and have now completed the Telescope Questline.
Effigy Questline
Head to the Cemetery, as you walk through the Cemetery/Cemetery Path/Mausoleum certain trees will begin shedding their leaves. Five trees in total will have their leaves shed and you must shoot each of these bald trees with any explosive weapon (wonder weapon is ideal), dropping a branch on the ground that you must interact with to pick up.
The trees may have already shed their leaves by the time you are doing this step if you have walked passed this area after gazing into the crystals. The bald trees are all located around the Cemetry/Cemetery Path/Mausoluem and are easily identified.
Once you have collected the five branches, they can be found together in the Cemetery and you must search the tombstones in the Cemetery for one that has the date of death of 1912, the player in the game that is playing as the character that is on that tombstone must interact with the tombstone.
When solo, you can just look for the tombstone that has the year 1912 and interact with it, no need to worry about the face. However, on co-op you must do this and it will be a random player each game, if that player is not the one with the Alistair's Annihilator then you will need to coordinate with the player that does for this step.
After interacting with the tombstone, the player with the Alistair's Annihilator needs to shoot the ground in front of the branches with a charged shot until you get the fire variant charged shot on the ground. Afterward, you can interact with the branches to form an Effigy and interact with the Effigy to enter an afterlife-like mode.
You will then need to find a ghost around the map and escort it back to the Cemetery similar to the Escort Challenge to unlock pack-a-punch within five minutes. This ghost can spawn anywhere inside the estate, but is most commonly found around the edges of these locations:
Dining Room
Master Bedroom
Entrance Hall
Wine Cellar
If you can't find the ghost in the above locations, run across the edges of every room in the estate until you find the ghost.
Once you find the ghost, escort it to the Cemetery where it will burst into flames and drop a big stone slab. Interact with this slab for around five seconds to start a lockdown where you must survive against Zombies, Nosferatus, and Werewolves.
Once completed, you can interact with the stone slab to pick it up and will be rewarded with a Max Ammo, and have completed the Effigy Questline.
Knight Questline
Head to the Library, turn on the Fire Trap and shoot the flames with the Alistair's Annihilator until the flames are blue. Once blue, pull out your shield and run through the flames to ignite your shield, you now need to melee four fireplaces within 45 seconds to turn them blue. This needs to be done for three sets of four fireplaces, each set rewarding you with a Gem.
Only a set needs to be done within 45 seconds, all three sets do not need to be done within the 45 second window. The order of the sets do not matter, however the order of the fireplaces to melee within those sets do matter.
Library Fireplace Set Order
Once you have completed this set pick up the Gem from the Billiards Room Fireplace.
Main Hall Fireplace Set Order
Once you have completed this set pick up the Gem from the West Gallery Fireplace.
Master Bedroom Fireplace Order
Once you have completed this set pick up the Gem from the Dining Room Fireplace.
If you have trouble with this fireplace order when starting from the Library, find another Fire Gate Energy Core and place it inside the Fire Gate Trap inside the Bedroom Hallway.
Once you have all three gems you need to place them inside three knight statues around the map. When you place a gem inside a knight statue, the statue will dissolve and the gem will begin to follow you. Your goal is to have all three gems following you at the same time and lead them to the Forest.
These gems will only follow you if you are close to them, if you run to far from them they will stop following you and you will need to find them again and guide them. This can be easily avoided by only walking when guiding the gems as the walk speed will never be too fast for the gems.
The locations of the three knights you need to place the gems into are:
The order in which you interact with these knights does not matter, but once all three gems are following you guide them to the Forest where you must guide the gems over their corresponding symbols on the ground. The symbols that correspond to a gem will be the same color.
Once the gems have been embedded into their symbols they will summon ghost knights that act as soul boxes where you must kill zombies near them to fill it. Each knight must be filled twice, moving closer to Pack-a-Punch each time they are filled.
Once all three knights are in front of Pack-a-Punch they will form a triangle and a Werewolf will spawn. You must kill this Werewolf within this triangle, spawning a big stone slab.
Interact with the stone slab for around 5 seconds to begin a lockdown where you must survive against Zombies, Catalyst Zombies, and Werewolves. The Werewolves won't spawn until you have killed enough Catalyst Zombies and killing the Werewolves will complete the lockdown.
Once completed, you can interact with the stone slab to pick it up and will be rewarded with a Max Ammo, and have completed the Knight Questline.
Building the Fire Traps
You must find a Fire Gate Energy Core and install it into any of the Fire Gate Traps. These energy core can spawn in fourteen different locations around the map:
Once you have found the Fire Gate Energy Core, head to the Library and interact with the trap control panel to place the energy core into the control panel, powering the Fire Trap.
It is recommended to place the first Fire Gate Energy Core you find inside the Library as this will come in handy for the Knight Questline.
Obtaining the Alistair's Annihilator
You must first obtain and upgrade the Alistair's Folley wonder weapon, which can be obtained by locating four colored symbols (red, green, yellow, blue) around the map each with four spawn locations.
Obtaining the Alistair's Folley
The Red symbol can be found in one of the four locations:
The Green symbol can be found in one of the four locations:
The Yellow symbol can be found in one of the four locations:
The Blue symbol can be found in one of the four locations:
Once you know all four symbols, head to the Library where you must enter the correct symbols in the safe on the wall containing the Alistair's Folley. Once entered, you can interact with the top of the safe to enter the code and claim your wonder weapon.
Upgrading to the Chaos Theory
Head to the Library and use your Ballistic Shield to shield bash the bookshelf to the right of the Workbench to reveal the part needed for the upgrade.
Once acquired, head to the Greenhouse Laboratory and place the Chaos Material you obtained from the Werewolf after Unlocking Pack-a-Punch inside the machine in the middle of the lab, after around 20 seconds it will be transformed into a Prima Materia you can pick up on the left side of the machine.
If you do not have the Chaos Material, you must kill a Werewolf with a weapon using Silver Bullets to get it to drop.
Once you have the two parts needed, head to the Workbench at the back right of the Greenhouse Laboratory to craft the Chaos Theory wonder weapon.
Upgrading to the Alistair's Annihilator
You must kill three Nosferatus with the charged shot of the Chaos Theory, each Nosferatu killed by the shot will drop Bile. You must collect three of these Bile materials and bring them to a glowing red tomb inside the Cemetery.
Interact with the tomb to summon a Nosferatu that you must kill with the Chaos Theory. Killing this Nosferatu will drop a Nosferatu Chaos Material that you must pick up. This is the first of three materials needed for the upgrade.
You can easily kill this Nosferatu by shooting charged shots in front of the tomb after summoning it since this is where it jumps onto the map.
Inside the Cemetery along the railings of the stairs to the Mausoleum, there will be lanterns that are lit up, most are lit up yellow but one is going to be lit up with a slightly orange tint. You must find the orange lantern and shoot it with the Chaos Theory, doing so will cause the lantern to go dark and you must repeat this for three more lanterns.
After shooting the final lantern, you can shoot the cloud of smoke above the lantern to quickly kill the Bat before it begins to fly away. If it does fly away, you can shoot it out the air or with some Silver Bullets to get it to fly lower to the ground so you can more easily hit it with the wonder weapon.
Once the fourth and final lantern has been shot a Bat will spawn out of it that you must kill with the Chaos Theory. Killing this Bat will drop a Bat Chaos Material that you must pick up. This is the second of the three materials needed for the upgrade.
If fail this step by shooting the wrong lantern, you will either need to wait around 2 minutes or a few rounds for the lanterns to be lit again. Very rarely, the game completely bugs out and you need to restart the game. Needless to say, make sure you shoot the right lantern.
Finally, head to the Forest where you will need to shoot zombies with the charged shot of the Chaos Theory while they are over one of the three mushroom dig sites. If the charged shot was the yellow/brain rot variant then the zombie will begin to dig on the dig site and you have a chance to receive the final part.
If you did not get the part then you must repeat the same thing on the other dig sites until you get the part. There are only three dig sites and you are guaranteed to get the part on the final one if you haven't before
Once all three parts have been collected, head to the Greenhouse Laboratory and craft the Prima Materia using the machine below the telescope and pick it up on the other side. You can only craft one Prima Materia at a time so you need to input the parts one by one until you have all the Prima Materia.
Once you have all three Prima Materia, head to the Workbench at the back left of the Greenhouse Laboratory to build the Alistair's Annihilator wonder weapon.
Step 4: Werewolf Boss Fight
Prepare heavily for this boss fight, fully Pack-a-Punch your weapons, get the Homunclus out of the box and the Hellion Salvo if you don't have a fully kitted Spitfire or Hades, make sure you have Silver Bullets equipped on all your weapons that aren't the wonder weapon, and get all your perks.
When ready, all players must hold the interact button on the stone slab door inside the Forest to enter the boss arena to being the three-phase boss fight.
Phase 1
For this phase, a large green glowing square will appear on the ground. You must rotate the statues located in the corners of the arena to all be pointing toward this green square, if done correctly the statue's beam will change from white to green.
During this phase, the Werewolf is invisible and will attack you by charging at you. This charge attack should be avoided as it can do upwards of 175 dmg if it hits you head on. You can spot the Werewolf while it is doing this charge attack via a trail of smoke in the air.
Once all statues are pointing at the green square, throw a Homunculus and bait the Werewolf into the green square by standing in the circle and getting the Werewolf to charge at you. Stay in the circle while it charges you and once the Werewolf enters the green square it will be stunned for you to attack it.
Once stunned, rain fire on the Werewolf with your Silver Bullet weapon (ideally the Hellion Salvo or fully-kitted Spitfire/Hades) and if you do enough damage to the Werewolf you will have completed Phase 1. If you don't do enough damage to the Werewolf you'll need to repeat the process until you do.
You will know if you have done enough damage to the Werewolf if he groans in pain and you receive a Max Ammo and Carpenter. If the Werewolf just disappears and the statues rotate, then you have not done enough damage and must repeat the process. You should also pick up those drops immediately as the next phase will not last long.
Phase 2
For this phase, you must survive against Zombies, Catalyst Zombies, Werewolves, and Nosferatus until no more enemies are spawning and another Max Ammo and Carpenter spawn which you should again grab immediately.
Take advantage of the charged shots of the Alistair's Annihilator as it is one of the best wonder weapons in the game and can easily protect you against all enemies during this phase.
Phase 3
For this phase, you must do the exact same thing as Phase 1 except the green square will also be invisible. To find the green square, you must rotate a statue until the white beam turns green, this will reveal the green square for all to see.
Once the green square is revealed this phase is identical to Phase 1 from this point on, except the Werewolf Boss has more health than before. When the Werewolf is stunned inside the green square activate your Stock Option or Free Fire Elixir and unload on the Werewolf with your Silver Bullets weapon until it is defeated.
Congratulations! You have beaten the Dead of the Night main quest: Trial By Ordeal.
